The beginning of this symphony is absolutely astonishing! What incredible genius! Certainly the finest writing Sibelius ever did . . . What an awful tragedy this work did not see some type of fruition.

The story with the Eight looks like Sibelius had found a diamond in Tapiola but then instead of using it he prefered to throw it away.

Queen Elizabeth is a dead ringer for her grandmother Queen Mary, especially now as the character of Elizabeth's face has settled in. Both very formidable women.

These sketches show unsurpassed artistry and technique. I think that somehow in the last decades of his life, Sibelius lost his artistic self-confidence - or (in what amounts to the same thing) he raised the bar for himself so high that he could not possibly reach it. Very unfortunate, in my view. I am hoping that just as Anthony Payne "realized" the Elgar Third Symphony, someone might be able to do the same for this work.

Sibelius has bee a favourite of mine for decades . That said he was a seriously heavy drinker in his younger years and I think that his drinking probably had a negative effect on him after so many years of abuse . It does catch up with you.
